Rainy Night: Charles Burchfield, 1918 (The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.)
He creeps round the eerie empty houses at night
the cry of a lost soul illuminating a late window
on foreclosure and dispossession
The night stalker
alone, driving for hours through abandoned
neighborhoods, senses a curious
elation -- calmed for once, for once feeling almost
at home -- as though the light left on in
the vacant house had been lit
there for a ghost -- for him, alone --

In some sense we're all waiting for our foreclosures and dispossessions to be illuminated.
Hido's light is stagelight - near to inhuman - for some last act.
WB,
That description of Hido-light seems dead on. Every house in the Land of the Free may well be haunted by that eerie inner ... is it illumination, or a ghostly form of irradiation?
Charles Burchfield and Todd Hido (by the way) -- both from Northeastern Ohio. Though obviously several generations and universes apart in angle of view. (Hido came out here for Art School, and after they've seen the School of Art, no going back to the farm... or should I say the suburbs?)
